Flanders International Acrobatics Cup - FIAC 2009 7-13 April 2009
In 2009 , the club took a large squad of gymnasts to Belgium to compete at the respected Flanders International Acrobatic Cup. A total of 7 partnerships performed over the 3 days of competition; spread across the 11-16 AG pairs and groups and the Junior mixed pairs and groups categories. Three of the partnerships were new and 2 of them were competing at this level for the first time. Becca and Freya produced 2 strong routines and were just edged out of a place in the finals, finishing the qualifying in joint 10th place but losing out on a Finals place as their rivals had a higher technical score. Remarkably, the same fate befell Gabby, Fran and Emerald, who were also competing in their first international together. In the junior category, Jo Rosie and Izzy, who had only been together for 4 weeks, did exceptionally well with their Balance routine, but a mistake in their dynamic cost them a place in the Final. Chris & Beth gave a strong dynamic performance, but had to save a move in their Balance, which unfortunately also put them out of contention.
On Finals Day, Steph Laura and Hannah who had qualified easily, unfortunately dropped a move in their combined routine which sadly took them out of contention. Becky & Megan, who had spent the previous evening and the morning of the Finals tweaking their routine, gave a fantastic performance to take the Gold Medal. The experienced Trio of Cath Rosie & Emily had led from the start in qualifying and were definitely the team to beat. They performed their aclaimed Balance routine and then had to endure a nervous wait to see if they had beaten the Belgian favourites. They did - by 0.05 - and the Gold medal was theirs! A great week was rounded off with the traditional party and a noisy homecoming at Heathrow from parents and friends the following day.
