Turin International Acro Cup
7 - 9 July 2017.
3 Gold Medals, a Silver and a Bronze in Italy!
What a fantastic 5 days at the Turin Acrobatic Cup! Not just because our amazing gymnasts came home with an outstanding 3 Gold medals, a Silver, a Bronze and a 4th place, but because these guys - aged from 9 to 18 - showed the most fantastic team spirit imaginable. On and off the competition floor, through the moments of elation and the moments of heartbreak, they were always there for each other, at work and play.
Lucy and Ellie, who have enjoyed unprecedented success this year looked unbeatable right from the start and took yet another Gold. Catriona, Annie and Esmee qualified strongly in 3rd place, but were determined to improve on this for the final, which they duly did, increasing their overall score by a whole mark to take a truly well deserved Gold Medal. Ilka and Maddie qualified in first place and produced another great Routine for the Final, only to see their Canadian rivals inexplicably go ahead by 2 clear points. First to query the result was the extremely sporting Canadian coach and following a protest and investigation, a transcription error was discovered. The Canadian score was adjusted and Ilka and Maddie were awarded their Gold medal. Bella, Ruby and Lucy who in January, were competing at regional level had a mountain to climb to be ready for their first International. Theirs was a tough journey, but they did themselves proud, exceeding expectations and their pre competition goal by qualifying very strongly in 4th place - out of 24 entries! The Final saw them hold on to this position in the face of strong opposition - a really fantastic achievement! Sophie, Kirsten and Lara, who's build up was beset by injury produced 3 lovely routines to claim the Silver medal in their category. They were joined on the Medal Podium by team mates Elspeth, Georgia and Esme, who won the Bronze Medal and for whom Turin 2017 will always have special significance, as it marked their final competition together, as Elspeth and Georgia are retiring this Summer. Special mention must be made of Heidi and Annie, who suffered the agony of a dropped move, yet showed such professionalism, maturity and resilience, completing the Routine as if nothing had happened and then refusing to let the huge disappointment affect their attitude and enjoyment for the rest of the trip.
Add to this the fantastic team spirit, the games, the Banquet, the post-comp chill-out at the water park and the many memorable laugh out load moments and Turin 2017 will be a competition we will always remember.
