4 Gold, 2 Silver, a Bronze and a 4th place finish made the Clubs first International competiton for 2 years an event that will be long remembered!
Twenty-two Gymnasts and 5 staff returned from Italy triumphant, having won a remarkable 7 medals, including 4 Gold, at the respected Turin International Acrobatics Cup. The girls found themselves up against 300 other gymnasts from 11 different countries as they vied for International honours over 3 days of intense competition in the heat and humidity of Turin.
With entries at every level of difficulty, many of the gymnasts were also experiencing their first taste of international competition. As such, there was considerable delight when after 2 days of demanding qualification, everyone had secured a place in the Finals.
With 3 Oxford Trio’s competing against each other in the Age Group Final, there was intense interest in the results, which ultimately saw Molly Kavanagh, Kirsten Richards and Esme Peal win Gold, with their team mates Katie Martin, Georgia McDermott and Jasmin Hunt making it an Oxford One-Two by taking the Silver. Matilda Marriot, Bella Ekerold and Natasha Hutchinson finished a highly creditable 4th, having climbed a further 2 places from their qualifying position. In the Women’s Pairs there was a further Oxford double with Heidi Scholey and Lara Gunnell taking the Silver and Lucy Kavanagh and Ellie Roberts-Day securing the Bronze. The Trio of Abi Woodliffe-Thomas, Aysha Hutter and Samara Chan were determined to add International Gold to the National title they had won earlier in the year and they did not disappoint, performing one of the highest scoring routines of the Event to complete their personal Double. In the technically demanding Junior category, Sophie Newell and sisters Cossi and Elspeth Jackson, who had led the field from the start continued their winning ways and added a third Gold medal to the Teams tally. Finally it was the turn of the Seniors, Becky Evans, Gabbie Jackson and Heather Nixey. Despite being new to Senior competition, the girls held their nerve to win yet another Gold, taking the team’s final medal total to 4 Gold, 2 Silver and a Bronze, the Clubs most successful ever international result!
